From the A-list team that gave us 'Invictus', Eastwood & Damon give us 'Hereafter' - a supernatural thriller essaying the afterlife, grief, and the relationship mankind shares with the dead.
Eastwood directorial skill is, as always, brilliant - never overly preaching a film riddled with themes that could otherwise be corny or banal in the hands of any other director. Written by Peter Morgan ('The Last King of Scotland), the script is full of potential, but lacks the well developed characters needed to stitch the plot together. And upon the conclusion of the film you are ultimately left unsatisfied.
The plot is based around the lives of three strangers; Damon, a sensor/factory worker with the ability to communicate with the dead, A french journalist & survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, and a young boy who is attempting to cope with losing his twin brother to a car accident. Eastwood does well to constantly cross between continents and stories, never over complicating the narrative - upon saying this, the way he has used the French language is absolutely beautiful, only subtitling the relevant information, leaving you drenched in its poetics and pronunciation for all additional dialog.
Ultimately, this film is one for DVD - without a large score, action, or use of 3D effects - check it out on your plasma at home!
